The United Nations-backed Principles for Responsible Investment Initiative (PRI) is a network of international investors working together to put the six Principles for Responsible Investment into practice. Devised by the investment community, the Principles reflect the view that environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues can affect the performance of investment portfolios and therefore must be given appropriate consideration by investors if they are to fulfill their fiduciary (or equivalent) duty. The Principles provide a voluntary framework by which all investors can incorporate ESG issues into their decision-making and ownership practices and so better align their objectives with those of society at large. The PRI initiative is managed by the PRI Secretariat and supports investors by sharing best practice, facilitating collaboration and managing a variety of work streams. As of December 2011 over 930 investment institutions have become signatories, with approximately US$ 30 trillion assets under management.

As a collaboration amongst some of the world’s leaders in sustainable water resource management, the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) aims to drive verified, watershed-level responses to shared water risk that benefit people, nature and the economy. We will do this through building and operationalizing and international water stewardship system, at the heart of which will be the AWS Standard (currently under development). The system will include third-party verification, outreach and capacity development, underpinned by effective, multi-stakeholder governance, strong communications, an internationally recognized brand and rigorous impact monitoring. Our work will build on and complement existing tools and approaches, including other sustainability standards, to providea coherent and consistent approachin water stewardship worldwide. When operational, the AWS international water stewardship system has the potential to create a lasting, positive change in the way that water is used and managed throughout the world.
