Corporate Respect and Support for Human Rights: A Key Foundation for Sustainability
Partners
Global Compact
Description
The Global Compact's Human Rights Principles call on business to respect and support human rights as an essential component of corporate sustainability, business' contribution to sustainable development. The corporate responsibility to respect human rights has come into greater focus in recent years, especially the UN Human Rights Council endorsed the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (June 2011). Avoiding any infringement of the human rights of others and addressing any adverse human rights impacts with which the business is involved, is the minimum required of all businesses everywhere, and an important precondition for sustainable development. To achieve sustainable development, all societal actors have a role to play, thus, in addition to respecting human rights, the Global Compact calls on businesses to take additional voluntary action to support or advance human rights. Such actions may be through core business activities, strategic social investments and philanthropy, advocacy and public policy engagement, and working in partnership and other collective action. With a mix of presentations, discussions and interactive exercises, participants in this session will share and explore concrete ways to ensure that corporate sustainability policies, processes, initiatives and commitments are grounded in human rights for maximum positive impact, especially for women, children, indigenous peoples and other marginalized groups.

Enterprise 2020: Multi-stakeholder Planning in Ukraine
Partners
Global Compact Network Ukraine
Description
Sustainable development in Ukraine is the concept widely discussed within civil society organizations, businesses and academia. However, there is no national sustainability strategy and even economic strategies tend to focus on short–term or medium-term goals. Realizing the social and environmental challenges as well as opportunities for embracing those, the Ukrainian business community together with civil society organizations launched a unique multi-stakeholder process of defining a vision for the enterprise of the future (with a 2020 target). The process identified acute challenges to Ukraine’s social and economic development, risks for business and ways in which companies can engage to turn these risks and challenges into opportunities. The project grew in scale over time and included all major stakeholders. The example of Enterprise 2020 or, in other words, of the Future we Want exercise is a demonstration of a bottom-up approach to garnering political will to cooperate on sustainable development challenges.

Making Sustainability Standards Work for those Most in Need
Partners
Government of Switzerland
Description
The Committee on Sustainability Assessment (COSA) will launch its first global report that looks at what standards and certifications are actually achieving. Every month, billions of dollars of products are traded with certifications that are perceived as a proxy for being sustainable. The panel session will provide a summary overview of the finding of the latest impact research on private voluntary standards as well as highlights of what policy makers and the private sector are doing to ensure that the rural poor can benefit from the opportunity presented by growing markets for sustainable products. The objective of the panel is to build support and collaboration for the launch of a global, shared approach to the impact assessment and monitoring of sustainability standards through the adoption of common indicators and reporting standards using the COSA framework.

Action towards Sustainable Livestock Sector Development
Partners
FAO
Description
The Global Agenda of Action in Support of Sustainable Livestock Sector Development (GAA) is built on the notion that demand growth for livestock products will likely continue for decades as incomes and human population continue to grow. Such demand growth will need to be accommodated within the context of a finite and sometimes dwindling natural resource base, and will be faced with the need to respond to climate change, both through adaptation and mitigation. For this to happen, GAA proposes a change of practices through policy and institutional change, research and development, capacity building and accompanying investments that will lead to efficiency gains in natural resource use and reduced emission intensity, while providing social, economic and health benefits. A GAA is open to all stakeholders who agree with its objectives, its focus areas and the types of action, including information sharing, the development of metrics, resource assessments, technology exchange, capacity building, policy analyses and development, and communication and outreach. Stakeholders agree that the comparative advantage of a GAA lies in the strengthened partnership, interaction, and consensus actions that prevent duplication of effort and that increase its influence on research and development agendas

Technology and Knowledge Sharing for Sustainable Agriculture
Partners
CropLife, World Farmers' Organization
Description
Recent discussions on agriculture have questioned the role technology has played in moving agriculture forward, and what role private and public sectors can play in advancing innovation. At the same time, it has become clear that the uptake gap in best practices and techniques is limiting the impact that new technologies can have on productivity and sustainability. Essential to addressing this gap is a need to put in place the supporting mechanisms to help farmers adopt new techniques and sound management systems. Knowledge sharing mechanisms, such as extension services, need to be revitalized and expanded to ensure innovation reaches farmers' fields and contributes to sustainable agriculture. This session will focus on two ‘sides of the coin’, discussing both the role innovative technologies can play to advance sustainable agriculture and the role of knowledge sharing mechanisms to improve the deployment and uptake of innovations and best practices. Speakers will focus on practical experiences and on the ground examples of how this can be done and of the impacts of innovative methods on farmers’ livelihoods, environment and productivity.

Enabling Achievement of Water Sustainability Objectives: Collective Action & the Water Action Hub
Partners
Global Compact
Description
The case for collective action is built on the premise that water-related risks are shared between business, government, communities, and the environment, and that equitable processes through which all affected parties can come together and contribute to mitigating these shared risks is a powerful tool for combating this century’s emerging water issues. This premise leads directly to a “shared-risk, shared action model” whereby common problems that pose risks to businesses, governments, civil society can best be addressed through joint efforts that generate common understanding, strategies, and solutions – essentially “shared value.” This session will profile the CEO Water Mandate’s Water Action Hub as an enabling platform to help companies understand their options for collaborating with others on water issues, and who they can work with in a particular geography to address shared risk. The session will orient around a facilitated multi-stakeholder discussion of the merits and challenges of water-related collective action and partnerships more generally.

Partnerships for Globally Sustainable Agriculture
Partners
Global Compact Local Network Malaysia
Description
The panel will present a key partnership initiative that has been developed as a basis for sustainable agriculture: Responsible Sourcing Guidelines (RSGs) deliver supply-chain visibility to buyers based on reputational strengths of companies involved and precise mapping of sources and logistics between producers and markets. This is a complimentary approach to the certification-based systems that have proven successful for major transnational companies, but are too costly for smallholders and other players that form the bulk of production systems. The panel invites comments from two governments with significant domestic as well as export-driven agricultural industries. The session learning is rounded off with a view from a key UN agency on how RSGs, based on both trust and evidence, are a sound basis for public-private partnerships in food production.

Energy+: An International Initiative to Leverage Commercial Investments and Climate Finance
Partners
Government of Norway
Description
Transformational change will be required to increase access to modern energy, improve energy efficiency and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To provide universal modern energy access by 2030, annual investment needs to average more than 5 times the current level of USD 9 billion. ODA is insufficient to meet this need. The public sector, including multilateral and bilateral institutions, needs to use its funds and tools to leverage commercial investments and to develop effective public-private community partnerships. Results-based financing can be used to create required incentives to improve the enabling environment for commercial investments in the energy sector. Emerging lessons from dialogue with the private sector will be presented at the event, and the question of how climate finance could potentially become a major source of finance for renewable energy development will be addressed.
